What are white goods?
White goods are generally any large appliance, such as refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, freezers, washers, dryers, and hot water heaters.
Do I need to remove anything from my white goods prior to recycling?
Yes. Refrigerators, freezers, and other commercial chillers contain HCFC's, CFC's, and, HFC's. These are ozone depleting substance that must be properly removed by a qualified tecnician before being recycled. If you have these item and you would like to recycle them please contact us for specific details.
What are non-ferrous metals?
Non-ferrous metals include aluminum, copper, brass, lead, zinc, nickel, titanium, cobalt, chromium and precious metals. Typically, they are worth more than ferrous metals.
What are ferrous metals?
Ferrous metals include scrap iron and steel (ie: old cars, household appliances, steel beams, railroad tracks, ships, food packaging, etc).
Is most residential scrap metal ferrous or non-ferrous?
It is estimated that 79% of residential scrap metal is ferrous, and the remaining 21% is non-ferrous.
What is the amount of small residential metal scrap typically discarded?
The amount of residential scrap metal discarded ranges anywhere from 2 to 44 kilograms per household per year. Overall, it is estimated that Canadians discard between 116,000 and 232,000 tonnes of household scrap metal or metal-bearing products each year.
What is the market like for scrap metal?
The market for scrap metal is global and highly competitive. As such, prices fluctuate according to supply and demand. Typically, non-ferrous scrap is worth much more than ferrous scrap. Harbour Metals can provide you with current rates.
What are greenhouse gas emissions?
Greenhouse gases are components of the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation at specific wavelengths within the spectrum of infrared radiation emitted by the earth's surface, the atmosphere and clouds. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, HCFC's, CFC's,HFC's, PFC's and SF.
What is the connection between greenhouse gas emissions and recycling?
Recycling eliminates the emissions associated with raw materials extraction and processing. Overall, it requires less energy to recycle an end-of-life product into a new product than it does to make that item from raw inputs.
